EWIM Mentoring Program – FAQs

Q.  Why was the EWIM Mentoring Program created?

A.  The EWIM Mentoring Program supports the White House Equal Futures Partnership initiative designed for women to participate fully in public life and to lead and benefit from inclusive economic growth.   EWIM uses collaboration and mentoring as catalysts to increase the Federal workforce’s awareness of the career path and number of women in the Senior Executive Service (SES).

Q.  What are the components of an EWIM event?

A.  Each EWIM session includes a keynote speaker, OPM leadership development presentation, and networking.  The afternoon session also includes a flash mentoring component.  For specific session descriptions and objectives, please see information below.

  • Morning Session - Moving Ahead in the Federal Government is a 1 ½ hour event that targets Federal Employees in grades GS-11 and below. The objectives of this session are to:
  • Highlight various aspects of the Federal Leadership Journey
  • Provide an overview of the leadership competencies needed to be successful
  • Provide an overview of the best practices in development of the Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs)
  • Promote career growth and development

Note:  Target grade levels can vary based on location.

  • Afternoon Session - Executive Women in Motion: Pathways to Senior Executive Service is a three-hour event that targets Federal employees in grades GS 12-15 grade levels.  The objectives of this session are to:

  • Motivate Federal employees towards attaining opportunities in the Senior Executive Service
  • Provide an overview of the SES hiring process and the role of the QRB

  • Provide further insight into the ECQs and how they apply to the SES
  • Promote and encourage interagency collaborations and networking
Note:  Target grade levels can vary based on location.

Federal Executive Boards have the option to host a morning and afternoon session.  Agencies interested in sponsoring a morning session should coordinate directly with OPM’s Senior Executive Service and Performance Management (SESPM) Office at SESDevelopment@opm.gov.

Q.  How is the success of EWIM measured?

A.  Each session ends with participants completing a survey.  In addition, we are currently developing a follow-up survey tool for participants who attended an EWIM event in the previous six months.

Q.  What feedback have you received?

A.  Since 2014, OPM has sponsored EWIM events at Federal Executive Boards including: Atlanta, Baltimore and San Francisco.  Participants have overwhelmingly provided positive feedback on their overall experience, content, and would recommend the event to their colleagues.  Specific survey results are included below.
