Questions and answers

Agencies have their own policies and procedures for determining telework eligibility and the application process.  In general, employees should familiarize themselves with those procedures and be prepared to discuss how they will continue to accomplish the work of the agency in a telework environment without adverse effects on the organization, co-workers, and customers. While an employee may request a telework arrangement in writing or verbally (depending on the agency’s policy), the Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 requires that a written telework agreement between the supervisor and employee be in place before a telework arrangement begins.  This written agreement should outline the specifics of the telework arrangement (e.g., location of telework, frequency, expectations, etc.).  Additionally, the employee will be required to successfully complete an interactive telework training program prior to entering a written telework agreement. Note that the head of an agency has discretion to exempt employees from this training requirement if they have already been participating in telework.
