About Us

In 2009, Executive Order 13518 (external link), Employment of Veterans in the Federal Government, established the Veterans Employment Initiative and OPM created its Veterans Programs Office and the affiliated Feds Hire Vets website to improve efficiency and effectiveness while providing strategic leadership and direction for all veterans and military-connected initiatives. Additionally, the EO established the Council on Veterans Employment, the 24 agency Veterans Employment Program Offices and other initiatives to assist in the hiring and retention of military veterans and military-connected family members.

The Veterans Programs Office (VP) Office is located under OPM’s Workforce Policy and Innovation Division/ Talent Acquisition, Classification & Veterans Programs. This office works across the Federal Government, collaborating with key stakeholders on military connected programs including the Transition Assistance Program partners such as the Department of Defense, Department of Labor, and Department of Veterans Affairs, to maximize the number of veterans, transitioning military service members, military spouses and family members employed and retained in the civil service.

Managed by the VP office, the www.opm.gov/fedshirevets website is the single site for Federal employment information for Veterans, transitioning military service members, military spouses, family members and Federal hiring officials. This website is a critical component of the Federal Government’s strategy for the recruitment and employment of veterans.

In addition to administering the Governmentwide Disabled Veterans Affirmative Action Program under 5 U.S.C. 720 and 5 CFR Part 720, Subpart C,  this office oversees the implementation of several Executive Orders (EO), including EO 13518 Employment of Veterans in the Federal Government, EO 13832 Enhancing Noncompetitive Civil Service Appointments of Military Spouses and EO 14100.

Expand opportunities to hire and retain veterans, transitioning military service members and their families who have the experience, skills and competences the Federal Government needs.

  • Provide Governmentwide leadership to improve the federal employment opportunities for veterans, transitioning military Service members, military spouses, and their families;
  • Develop and implement the Governmentwide strategic plan for veterans' employment and support the development of HR policies affecting veterans;
  • Improve the knowledge, capability, and effectiveness of the twenty four Veterans Employment Program Offices to fulfill their responsibilities and duties in support of their agency's veteran hiring efforts;
  • Provide operational support to the Council on Veterans Employment, its Steering Committee, and OPM leadership in their respective Council roles;
  • Support veterans related events such as Veterans Day that highlight the Value of a Veteran, their leadership ability, and commitment/sacrifice to our nation.
