Director Berry, Congresswoman Norton And Other Agency Leaders Visit The Frederick Douglass Community Center In Historic Anacostia

OPM Director John Berry and Agency and Congressional Leaders will promote nutrition, literacy, fitness and an all around healthy lifestyle at the Frederick Douglass Community Center as part of the 2010 Feds Feed Families summer food drive

Washington, DC - On July 21, 2010, U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director John Berry and Agency and Congressional leaders will take the Feds Feed Families food drive to the Frederick Douglass Community Center in Historic Anacostia, Washington, DC.

Principles will prepare nutritious snacks, engage in educational computer lessons, and exercise with Wii Fitness with the young people at the center (ages 5-12). This is an opportunity for Government leaders to visit with the members of the communities that benefit the most from FFF contributions -- the children. Our mission in this food drive is to collect 1.2 million pounds of non-perishable food items and other essentials nationwide and to support the United We Serve: Let's Read! Let's Move! campaign which encourages a healthy lifestyle for all ages.

The Capital Area Food Bank has partnered with the Frederick Douglass Community Center for seven years. During the school year, the center is open to about twenty children who receive computer training, homework instruction, and a hot meal provided by the food bank's Kids Cafe program five days a week. During the summer months, the Center runs a six week camp where twenty-five children receive breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack each day. These children are also able to participate in enrichment activities and excursions around Washington, DC.
